Tango Gameworks has Been Acquired by South Korean Publisher Krafton

Just a couple of months after it was announced that Tango Gameworks (creators of the beloved Hi-Fi Rush and Evil Within duology) would be shutting down, the studio has now been bought from Xbox by publisher Krafton, who are best known for publishing games like PUBG and The Callisto Protocol. This purchase of the studio will also include the rights of Hi-Fi Rush, which the publisher said in a statement earlier today. They also noted the purchase as their ‘first significant investment in the Japanese video game market’.

The publisher specifically noting that they would now be owning the rights to Hi-Fi Rush is no accident as, considering the popularity of the rhythm action game when it launched earlier last year, its clear that there’s a big fanbase for this series. That’s despite Microsoft’s indication that the game underperformed, which was one of the key reasons leading to Tango Gameworks being shut down alongside other studios Arkane Austin, Alpha Dog and Roundhouse Games. Unfortunately, only Tango Gameworks seems to have been saved from being shut down as part of Krafton’s purchase.

The announcement that Tango Gameworks would be shuttered was very controversial when it was announced back in April. Considering that the studio remains one of the most consistent Xbox brands under Bethesda and indications that their most recent game, Hi-Fi Rush had sold ‘well’, this came as quite a shock. Thankfully, with Krafton acquiring the studio, hopefully, the studio are able to continue their work in making some of the most unique and risky games on the market. Krafton have also confirmed that they want the studio to ‘continue working on the Hi-Fi Rush IP and other future projects’ which is hopeful news for a studio believed to be finished.
