Geralt of Rivia will Return in The Witcher 4- But Not As its Main Character

Thanks to a recent interview with Doug Cockle- the iconic voice behind ‘Witcher’ protagonist Geralt of Rivia- we know that the iconic character will be returning to the series in the fourth mainline game. During an interview with Fall Damage, Cockle confirmed that the titular character is “part of the next game” but the main story “isn’t about him this time”. This makes sense, considering that the masterwork third game in the series is the end of Geralt’s journey.

The Witcher 4, codenamed ‘Polaris’, is being worked on by CD Projekt Red but is likely still a few years off- especially considering support for Cyberpunk 2077 only finished when its DLC launched late last year. Almost nothing is known about the release, but we do know that its likely one of the next game from the studio to be released. This comes alongside a full-on remake for The Witcher 1, A completely new IP, a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 and a multiplayer game set in the Witcher universe. Geralt’s saga may have ended with The Wild Hunt in 2015 but its clear that the studio’s ambitions are hungry for much more.

Whether Geralt of Rivia’s return will be simply as a cameo or as part of a greater force in the narrative remains to be seen. Considering how core the gruff Witcher is to the series, though, its likely that he’ll have quite an important role to play. Whether the fourth game is a sequel following the escapaded of Geralt’s adopted daughter Ciri or a prequel set before the Witcher’s decline is also up in the air. Speaking more on the next game, Doug Cockle said the following during the interview:

“Witcher 4 has been announced. I can't say anything about it. What we know is that Geralt will be part of the game; we just don't know how much, and the game won't focus on Geralt. So it's not about him this time. We don't know who it's about. I'm excited to find out. I want to know! I have not seen any script yet—I mean, I couldn't tell you if I did. This is the thing, so I could be lying through my teeth. But I'm not. Or am I?"

Although vague, its nice to know that the iconic Witcher will be returning for the fourth entry in such a revered series- even if it’s something that a lot of fans expected since the game’s announcement.
