South Park: Snow Day Launches to Poor Critical Reception

In an unsurprising development, the latest South Park game titled ‘Snow Day’ has launched to some pretty negative reviews from both critics and fans. This is the first big South Park game since the well regarded RPGs ‘The Stick of Truth’ and ‘The Fractured but Whole’ and, unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to be living up to their legacy. The game is currently sitting at a weak 63 on Opencritic- with only 28% of critics recommending the release.

Instead of following on from the series’ prior RPG entries, ‘Snow Day’ instead opts for an action adventure style that sees you fighting against bots either solo or with friends in a snowball-esque battle system. If this concept appears to be a little shallow for a full game, you’d be correct. It seems that critics agree too- with combat being described as repetitive and boring alongside some grating comedic elements that you may expect to find in a South Park game. In this entry, however, they’re especially irritating.

IGN were especially harsh on THQ Nordic’s latest release- giving the game a 3/10 score. They had the following to say:

“Aggravating hack-and-slash combat and surprisingly sparse jokes make South Park: Snow Day! dull, toothless, and a big step in the wrong direction for South Park games.”

On a similar note, VideoGamer were not impressed- scoring the game a 5/10 in their review. In summary, they said this:

“Snow Day’s moment-to-moment slapstick humor and inventive combat are undermined by unfulfilling progression and an acute lack of content.”

So, if you want to get your South Park fix in videogame form, its clear that this isn’t the right avenue to go down. Thankfully, there are also the other RPGs in the series developed by THQ Nordic as well that should be able to fill your specific niche. Unless you’re completely dedicated to the IP, however, this one seems to be an easy miss. Considering also that the game is only around four hours long, there are much better releases for you to spend your money on.
