Super Mario Bros. Wonder Direct Announced for Later Today

In a recent post on X/Twitter, Nintendo announced that on August 31st (today), there would be a mini Nintendo Direct focusing solely on the upcoming 2D Mario platformer ‘Super Mario Bros. Wonder’. The livestream will last roughly 15 minutes and will show off more gameplay, mechanics and wacky aspects of the game. It was also announced to be taking place at 15:00pm BST, which means its not long until fans can get more details.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder was first revealed earlier this year and showed off a funky new spin on the series. Being the first truly new mainline 2D Mario game since 2012, there’s a lot riding on this entry- and from its initial reveal trailer, it’s certainly living up to the hopes of fans. Diverting from the safe, often boring landscapes and gameplay of the ‘New Super Mario’ games, ‘Wonder’ is instead taking everything we knew about 2D Mario and is throwing it on its head- maybe even literally.

With completely new playable characters, a new mechanic that can create some very funky gameplay and, of course, even a new power-up that seemingly turns Mario into an… elephant, this is one of the most imaginative games in the series to date. Coming off of the coattails of Super Mario Odyssey and the success of Bowser’s Fury as a part of the Super Mario 3D World Switch port, Nintendo is heading in a fantastic direction with their famous Italian plumber. Let’s hope that what we see of Wonder later today lives up to its potential.
