Starfield’s File Size is Revealed (and it’s Huge)

In the leadup to Starfield’s release on September 6th, fans have been drip-fed small drops of information since the massively successful Starfield Direct in June. The most recent piece of information uncovered about the game was found on Xbox’s official site. If you go to the Starfield page, you can click on ‘more’ and find that the ‘approximate size’ of the game has been set as a massive 125GB.

It’s important to note that this may vary up to the release of the game but considering that the pivotal date is only two months away, the file size isn’t likely to increase too drastically. This size may also just be a placeholder until a more concrete figure has been determined as other details on the game on the website have yet to be revealed (including supported languages and accessibility features).

This file size, while massive, shouldn’t be too surprising considering he sheer scope of Starfield. Comparatively, looking at the recently released ‘Resident Evil 4’ (which is a linear, much more streamlined, linear game), we can see that this weighed in an 83.38 GB- which is still very hefty. If Bethesda’s latest game delivers on all the promises made in the last Starfield direct, this estimated file size is impressively small- especially when you look at poorly optimized games like last year’s Call of Duty and FIFA entries- which soared far above 100GB each.

With games getting so much more ambitious and, as a result, requiring more space, it brings into question the limited storage capacities modern consoles provide. With the current largest storage (without any expensive external SSDs) being 1TB with the Xbox Series X, it leaves players with little choice but to delete older games when the latest AAA releases.

At this rate, the 512GB storage of the Xbox series S will barely be able to fit 4 games total- which is certainly an issue when even single-player titles are demanding more and more space. With the costs of external storage not dropping any time soon, players will have to make more drastic choices with which games to install and which to delete- which is a problem that can only be solved by cheaper and more accessible storage options.
