Spider-Man 2 Becomes Fastest-Selling PlayStation Studios Game

Sony has announced that Spider-Man 2, the latest game from Insomniac, sold 2.5 million copies in the first 24 hours of its launch. That makes it the fastest-selling game under the ‘PlayStation Studios’ banner so far beating out first-party offerings like God of War: Ragnarök and Horizon: Forbidden West. It also puts it on track to be one of the best-selling PlayStation 5 games, with millions of more copies likely to be sold within the coming weeks and months.

Last November, God of War: Ragnarök managed to sell a stunning 5.1 million copies in its first week alone, but it seems that Spider-Man 2 is poised to overtake that figure. Considering the huge success of Insomniac’s original Spider-Man game on the PS4 and the huge brand recognition of the hero, this isn’t too much of a surprise. Still, it’s an amazing accomplishment and is evidence that narrative-led single-player games are still hugely popular even in a landscape of multiplayer and live service offerings.

Not only is this the fastest-selling Insomniac game to date, but it’s also the fastest-selling PlayStation Studios offering. The PlayStation Studios banner was revealed in 2020 as a rebrand of SCE Worldwide Studios and encapsulates every first-party PlayStation release from multiple different developers. With so many huge games falling under this banner such as Ghost of Tsushima by Sucker Punch, The Last of Us Part II by Naughty Dog, and even the Ratchet and Clank series of games (also by Insomniac), Spider-Man 2 topping the list and being the fastest selling is quite a feat.

If sales keep up, it’s likely that Spider-Man 2 will also eventually eclipse its predecessor, which has sold over 20 million copies to date. This, in combination with the game’s impressive 90/100 score on Metacritic shows just how valuable Insomniac is as a studio to PlayStation, and cements Sony as the technical leaders of the gaming market. With so many high-quality well-selling releases, it seems that PlayStation’s momentum isn’t slowing any time soon.
