Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Receives Glowing Reviews

When Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown was announced at 2023’s Summer Games Fest, more than a few fans were disappointed with what was shown off. Although the game looked like a fantastic return to 2D for the franchise, many were expecting a full blown 3D sequel or remake after a long 14 year wait since the last entry in the series, Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands way back in 2010. They wanted something reminiscent of the iconic ‘Sands of Time’ as opposed to gameplay seemingly inspired by the Assassins Creed Chronicles spin-offs.

Thankfully, however, it seems that The Lost Crown is much more than those short-lived games. Instead, critics have given nothing but praise for the title so far- which is set to launch this Thursday, January 16th. Currently sitting at an impressive 87 on Opencritic with an overwhelming 94% of critics recommending the product, it seems that, despite not being 3D, this game is still well worth picking up whether you’re a fan of the series or not.

This rating is currently from over 100 critic reviews- with some of the biggest publications handing out heaps of praise. For example, Gamespot awarded the game a 9/10, saying the following:

“Prince of Persia boldly reinvents itself as a metroidvania, and it feels like it has found its new home.”

Similarly, Destructiod praised how effortlessly the series delves into a Metroidvania while managing to avoid frustration and deliver on the fantastic combat that the franchise is known for. They said the following:

“If you are a fan of Metroidvania-style games or even just a fan of fast-paced combat with a focus on boss fights, you’ll love this iteration of the Prince (of Persia).”

Unfortunately, not every publication was as thrilled with the latest Prince of Persia offering. PC Gamer were unimpressed with the slow story and meandering pacing that made the first half of the adventure feel like filler. They said as such in their review, in which they gave the game a 72/100:

“A palatable metroidvania with a mediocre story, my biggest frustration with The Lost Crown is how long it takes to get to the good stuff.”

In general, however, it does seem like critics are impressed with Ubisoft’s efforts here and, while not exactly what fans were expecting, this is still a worthy entry in the series. If you’re desperate for the much anticipated Sands of Time remake that may come within the next decade, this 2D Metroidvania may just curb your appetite until then.
