New ‘Super Mario Bros’ Movie Announced

On MAR10 day (March 10th), it was announced that Nintendo and Illumination would be working together once again to create another movie in the Mario Bros. universe. This was announced in a special video from Shigeru Miyamoto, who also confirmed other news such as a release date for the Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door remake as well as games like Mario Golf and Mario Tennis coming to the Nintendo Switch online service later this week.

It’s no surprise that the Super Mario Bros. movie will be getting a sequel considering the massive financial success of the initial entry last year. The film made over £1 billion during its worldwide cinema screenings and, of course, likely even more thanks to merchandise and game sales thanks to its popularity. What you may be surprised to hear, however, that we already have a release date in place. Chris Meledandri of Illumination stated in the short video presentation that the film would release on April 3rd 2026- just over two years away.

While we didn’t get any further information on the film, the fact that it is currently being worked on is still exciting- despite being so far away. One important aspect about the video to note, however, is that it is not mentioned as to whether this film is set to be a sequel or spin-off. There have been rumours of both Luigi and Donkey Kong spin-off films in the works, so whether this is one of those remains to be seen. Considering the success of the first movie, however, it wouldn’t be surprising to find out that several are in the works at the same time.

With the first Mario movie being a commercial and well loved movie amongst fans, hopefully the sequel takes things even further and delves into some more interesting elements of the Mushroom Kingdom. There’s still a long while to wait until we’ll actually get to see anything, however, but with the same team being confirmed to be working on this new entry, this should turn out just as good as the first film.
