Dragon’s Dogma 2 Slammed for Microtransactions

Capcom’s latest RPG, Dragon’s Dogma 2, is currently sitting at a ‘mixed’ rating on Steam despite receiving a mighty 89 rating on Opencritic. This Steam score has actually risen since its launch, where it initially received backlash and poor reviews leading to the game having a mostly negative reception. But why has such a seemingly great game been slammed by fans at launch- on PC especially? Well, this comes down to two things: microtransactions and performance issues.

Starting off with the more surprising of the two, with Dragon’s Dogma 2 being a single player adventure, you may be confused as to why microtransactions are included at all. Taking a poorly thought out page from Ubisoft’s book, Capcom decided to allow players to purchase some pretty pivotal parts of the game including changing their character’s appearance and reviving dead pawns (which make up the party of Dragon’s Dogma 2). What makes this worse is that these criminally overpriced purchases are a one time use- meaning you’ll have to continuously shell out for features that should be included in the package for free- especially considering this is a full price release.

Its not only the microtransactions that fans aren’t happy about, however. In an increasingly common and worrying trend for PC releases, the performance of Dragon’s Dogma 2 is unacceptable a lot of the time. According to reviews, even high end PCs are having difficulty in keeping the game at a consistent frame rate. On top of this, there are a slew of game breaking glitches such as crashes and getting stuck in the floor. What makes these worse is that Dragon’s Dogma 2 only allows players to have one save file- meaning it is easily possible for you to be completely stuck and have to start over- wiping hours of progress.

It seems that Capcom’s latest launch is in pretty rough shape and, on PC at least, it may be worth waiting until some of these more major bugs are fixed. Although consoles do seem to have missed the brunt of these issues, they are still receiving backlash of their own for the microtransactions currently in place. Whether you decide to buy this game in its current state is up to you- but it may be worth checking to see if your PC can handle the extreme requirements needed to get this game to run.
