Starfield’s ‘Shattered Space’ Expansion is Out Today

With little marketing push, you may be surprised to know that Starfield’s first DLC expansion is available now on Xbox Series consoles and PC. This was announced earlier this year but has crept up on us with not too much fanfare from Bethesda. In fact, review codes weren’t even sent out for this one so you’ll to wait for impressions to emerge in the coming days before deciding to buy this one. Of course, it you purchased the premium upgrade edition of the game, you’ll already have access to this DLC for free. It is not, however, available to every Game Pass subscriber.; you will have to buy this DLC separately.

The expansion is based around the mysterious Va’ruun faction who were in the base game but were obscured in shadow. With this expansion, you’ll be able to delve deeper into their lore and explore their base dedicated to the ‘Great Serpent’. It was one of the more interesting parts of Starfield’s lore so an expansion dedicated to this group sounds promising. Of course, this expansion won’t be able to solely tackle some of the more blatant issues with the game but it can help with some.

The DLC will also take place in a more traditional setting that leans away from one of Starfield’s most controversial features: the space travel. This content will take place entirely on one planet: Va'ruun'kai. For those more traditional Bethesda fans, this will be welcome news. Apart from this, the DLC will also include new enemies, over 50 locations and new quests that you’d expect from a piece of paid content like this. No news on the length of the DLC has been revealed but, judging by past Bethesda expansions like Fallout 4’s Far Harbour, this will likely last around 10-15 hours.

If you weren’t a fan of the base game, its unlikely that its DLC will change your mind but with several additions made to Starfield since launch (including town maps and a buggy to make traversing planets bearable), it may be a good time to revisit the game- especially if you forked out for the premium edition way back when it initially launched. If you want to but this DLC without this edition, you can pick it up for £29.99, which seems steep but it comparable to Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree which also released this year.
