Assassins Creed Shadows Delayed to 2024

Ubisoft’s next game in the Assassin’s Creed series has had an uncharacteristic delay to February 14th of next year. Assassin’s Creed: Shadows was originally slated to release on November 12th of this year but this was delayed due to the ‘best interest f the game’ according to Ubisoft. It seems that the company is taken some of the complaints of recent entries into account and has decided to delay the game to add polish and hopefully live up to fan’s expectations. As part of this delay, Ubisoft has also issued refunds to players who had pre-ordered the game.

The three-month delay isn’t too big of a surprise to Assassin’s Creed fans. Ubisoft had previously confirmed that the game would not be shown off at Tokyo Games Show after it was slated to make an appearance. This was due to what the company called ‘various circumstances’. It’s now clear that Ubisoft want to polish the game up a bit before release and likely didn’t want to hold a showcase for the game whilst announcing a delay the same day.

Interestingly enough, this delay also puts Assassin’s Creed Shadows in the same year as Ghost of Yotei- the sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, which was heavily compared to Assassin’s Creed when it launched in 2020. Ghost of Yotei was actually revealed just one day before Ubisoft announced the delay to Shadows. One big difference was the general sentiment towards ‘Ghost’ as players saw this as a better version of many Assassin’s Creed games in almost every way with a better story, gameplay, and stealth mechanics.

With this delay, the first Assassin’s Creed game set in Japan will be going head-to-head with Sucker Punch’s stealth action game set in a similar location and even time period. Both games will take place less than 30 years apart (AC Shadows in 1579 and Ghost of Yotei in 1603).  Could this be the year that Ubisoft prove that the Assassin’s Cred series is still worth talking about? We’ll find out when the game officially releases on February 14th of next year without any further delays.
