Baldur’s Gate 3 Was the Best Selling Game on Steam in 2023

Thanks to a recent post on Twitter/X by user ‘Baiisun’, we can see which games that released in 2023 sold the most copies on Steam. After the news about how Hogwarts: Legacy was the best selling game of the year as a whole, you may expect it to be on top for every platform. However, with the graph below, we can see that Larian Studios defied all odds and managed to make their CRPG not only the highest awarded game of 2023, but also the best selling on PC.

Making more than Starfield, Resident Evil 4 and Star Wars: Jedi Survivor combined, Baldur’s Gate 3 is undoubtably the king of Steam from last year- and its sales figures will likely only be increased further as we progress through 2024. No doubt its high praise at events such as the Game Awards and Golden Joysticks pushed it into first place, which is phenomenal for a product that released in the second half of the year without any substantial sale as of yet. This is especially impressive when you consider that it made double that of Starfield- which was one of the most hyped games of the decade.

This news means that, in combination with digital and physical sales from other platforms, Baldur’s Gate 3 has made over $1 billion in revenue. For a niche CRPG, this is ground-breaking and shows the incredible promise of the genre in the future and of Larian Studios as a moneymaking entity- especially when you consider that this was fully self published in house. This is an incredible accomplishment and, whether DLC or new project, its clear that almost everyone in gaming is excited about what’s next from Larian.
