Baldur’s Gate III is Leading in the Number of Game of the Year Awards Won

Thanks to the handy website known as the Game of the Year Award Tracker, we can see how each big game of 2023 stacks up against each other in terms of amount of awards won. So far, 262 awards for Game of the Year have been awarded- with just under half (130 to be exact) of them going to Baldur’s Gate III. This places it squarely in first place in a year that has been one of the most competitive of all time. This makes what Larian Studios have accomplished all the more impressive.

It should be no surprise that second place (so far) is Nintendo’s masterpiece ‘The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’. The game has received 60 game of the year awards from various news sites- which is incredibly impressive. In third, surprise contender ‘Alan Wake 2’ comes in with 38 awards- which will hopefully spurn more people to pick up this wonderfully weird experience. The remaining 34 awards have gone to various other releases including Spider-Man 2, Sea of Stars and Resident Evil 4. Considering how fantastic those releases were, this just proves how stacked of a year 2023 really was.

This website also allows you to take a look back at previous years to see what games dominated and what years had more or less competition than others. Looking at 2022, for example, the incredible God of War: Ragnarök did manage to win 105 different awards, but this couldn’t come close to Elden Ring’s domination with an astonishing 435 Game of the Year wins. Other games that decimated the competition in their respective years include The Last of Us Part II in 2020, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild in 2017 and The Witcher 3 in 2015.

Whilst there are still a lot of different awards to give out from multiple publications, it seems that Baldur’s Gate III is the clear frontrunner for Game of the Year with most who have played it. In such a competitive year, the ability to win almost half of all awards cements it as one of the greatest games of the generation- and also puts 2023 as one of the best years for videogames we’ve seen in decades.
