Seven Low Key Games Added to Nintendo Switch Online

In a surprise announcement, Nintendo has added seven completely new games to their Switch Online line-up. All of these will be accessible through both the basic Nintendo Switch Online subscription as well as the Online + Expansion pass addition. None of these are exactly big ticket items, which explains why Nintendo aren’t shouting these from the rooftops but it’s a beefy selection of NES games that’s sure to be appreciated by retro fans.

The first few games include Golf (which is pretty self-explanatory), Mach Rider (one of the first combat racing games) and Donkey Kong Jr Math which, admittedly, is a bit of a strange addition to see. Don’t be too surprised to see some more educational games coming to the NES library as Nintendo start to run out of big-ticket items to add to the service.  Next up is the little-known Mystery of Atlantis released back in 1987. This side scroller platformer is a little primitive but its main setting of the mythical land of Atlantis remains novel to this day- even if it fell short of being a true rival to Mario.

Solar Jetman: Hunt for the Golden Warpship is a game that not only has a wild name but is also known for being one of the better auto-scrolling shooters for the NES system. Developed by Rare (famous for Nintendo 64 hits like Banjo Kazooie and Conker’s Bad Fur Day), this is a perfect game to bust out on the Switch when you want some quick retro action. Cobra Triangle is another racing game but, in this one, you control a speedboat in monster infested waters. Although the controls still feel very clunky, there’s still something really impressive about these old school racing games.

The biggest game coming to the service as part of this collection, however, is most certainly Urban Champion. This fighting game may look primitive but it was one of the first in its genre and, considering how it was one of the few to receive a proper 3D 3DS port, it’s impact is impressive. While lacking the flashiness of modern games in the genre, Urban Champion is worth checking out to relive a piece of gaming history that is a little less known than some of its contemporaries. All of these games are available right now to all Nintendo Switch Online subscribers.
