The Three Best Gaming April Fools Jokes This Year

With April Fool’s day, gaming companies are given one day to announce some of the most outlandish and bizarre projects that may or may not actually be coming out. With the pranks getting more and more elaborate with each year, the lines between one-off April Fools jokes and full-on projects getting released. With that being said, let’s take a look at the best of the best from this year’s April Fools Day announcements- which may be the best and most self-aware year yet.

Super Mario Bros. Movie voices in the game

One announcement that had fans double taking was the announcement of several Nintendo games receiving voiceovers from the cast of the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie. This includes Chris Pratt’s voice in the original 1985 Super Mario Bros. and Seth Rogan in the original Donkey Kong trilogy on SNES- paired with his iconic laugh. Thankfully, of course, this isn’t actually real- instead being a hoax by news site IGN, but considering the heavy marketing push for the upcoming film, some fans didn’t find this too outlandish.

Minecraft’s Vote update!

The next update for Minecraft was announced and released on April 1st! With so many highly requested features and new mobs, just what did Mojang decide to add to the exponentially growing world of Minecraft? Voting. It’s become quite an event for fans when the yearly ‘mob vote’ comes around in Minecraft- allowing users to vote on which mob would appear in the game. Mojang noticed how popular this was, and now allows players to vote on changing aspects of the world as they play. This can be literally anything including exploding chicken, antigravity, and being killed in one hit. Finally, fans will be able to live out their wildest voting fantasies in the game!

The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog

Far and away the best announcement for this year’s April Fools was the release of a 100% legitimate videogame named ‘The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog’. A fully playable visual novel you can download for free on Steam, the game tasks you with finding the culprit of the blue blur’s untimely death. With a 98% overwhelmingly positive rating on Steam, this elaborate joke actually seems to have paid off. If you’re in the market for a game about a blue hedgehog getting murdered, then this is the game for you!

If this is the new standard of April Fools Jokes, fans are in for a wild ride in the next few years. Here’s hoping we get a ‘trial of Kirby’ game next year to make him accountable for all of his war crimes!
