Starfield DLC Gets Autumn Release Window

In a recent interview between Kinda Funny Games and Bethesda’s Todd Howard, it was revealed that the studio are planning on releasing Starfield’s big story expansion ‘Shattered Space’ this autumn. This will, of course, be the biggest update for Starfield yet and will also be the first piece of premium paid additional content that you’ll have to shell out for if you don’t own the premium edition of the game. Players can buy the premium version on its own or for an additional fee with Game Pass. Its worth keeping in mind that you’ll lose access to the base game as well as all of the DLC by proxy if you end your Game Pass membership, however.

In the interview, Todd Howard didn’t speak on what the DLC will include but did focus on what he implied to be Starfield’s biggest update yet. Since the game initially launched last September, Bethesda promised a new update every six weeks, which is a promise they’ve stuck to (even if these updates have done little more than fix bugs and slightly improve optimisation). With the next update, which is planned to be announced in the coming days, we’ll see some overhauls to the ship building mechanics as well as some improvements to the clunky map system- which was criticized heavily when the game first launched.

Of course, the biggest changes are being reserved for the paid Shattered Space expansion. This will include new story content, extra gear and locations to explore. Whether some of the more glaring flaws of Starfield will be addressed is up in the air, however. The game has seen a declining player count and rating on Steam in the months after it was released. Currently hovering at around a 60% mixed rating on Steam, both critic and community enthusiasm in this offering dropped off quickly after players finished the game. In fact, the game is currently the worst rated Bethesda release ever on Steam- with Fallout 76 slowly clawing its way back into people’s good graces inn recent years. With a lot of Starfield’s criticism coming down to empty planets and boring exploration, hopefully Autumn’s big DLC update can alleviate these issues and improve what is still a very flawed videogame in the eyes of many people.
