Minecraft Sells 300 Million Copies

If it was ever in doubt, Minecraft has cemented itself as the best-selling videogame of all time by reaching an insane 300 million copies sold. That’s over 100 million more than the second best-selling game: Grand Theft Auto V. It’s an insane milestone that highlights just how big this block-building game is- and how it remained at the top by selling steadily even over 12 years since its original v1.0 release. Considering that the game still has 140 million monthly players (according to Search Logistics), Minecraft shows no signs of slowing down.

The 300 million player milestone was revealed at last week’s Minecraft Live, which saw Helen Chiang (head of Mojang) announce the following:

“As we approach the 15th anniversary, Minecraft remains one of the best-selling games of all time, with over 300 million copies sold”

Considering the immense popularity of the game (enough to have its very own yearly event), it’s no surprise to see it at the top of the list sales-wise. Much of the game’s success comes from the simple but addictive premise of, well, mining and crafting. Coupled with one of the most simplistic art styles of all time, non-gamers can jump into Minecraft without being overwhelmed. This is on the same level as games such as Roblox and even Tetris for accessibility.

A lot of Minecraft’s popularity also comes from how many systems it is playable on. From PC to every major console to pretty much any phone that can run it, if you have some sort of device with a screen, you can probably play Minecraft on it. It has also managed to transcend the barrier of gaming by becoming the sole video game that a lot of traditional non-gamers play. With its immense popularity and appeal, that 300 million figure is only going to grow as more and more people are introduced to the addictive gameplay and social interactions that Minecraft offers. Essentially, as long as Microsoft keeps releasing Minecraft, it will sell copies.
