The First Spider-Man 2 Reviews are Out Now

Critics were allowed to drop their reviews for Spider-Man 2 last night- and its looking very positive for Insomniac’s latest title. With the game sitting at a 91/100 overall rating and 100% of critics recommending it so far, this is set to be another successful PlayStation exclusive for them to put under their belt. It seems that Insomniac has hit it out of the park yet again- and it’s yet another win for the Spider-Man franchise after the successful animated and live-action movies from the past few years.

After the events of Spider-Man and Spider-Man: Miles Morales, this sequel allows you to play as two Spider-Men in what seems to be a culmination of the previous two games in almost every way. With more powers, more traversal options, and the ability to switch characters at will within seconds, Insomniac are really showing their chops as developers in this release. That’s not to mention the PlayStation 5’s haptic feedback and SSD features making this really feel like a next-generation game in the same vein that God of War: Ragnarök did last year.

With its 91 rating, this entry is another hit for 2023- in what is quickly becoming one of the best years for gaming in a long time. It also seems to be the year for sequels that build off of the original in almost every way (evidenced also by Tears of the Kingdom from May). GamesRader+ shared this sentiment in their 10/10 review, where they had high praise for Peter Parker’s latest outing:

“Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 improves on its predecessor across the board, while saluting te superhero genre over the last 30 years as a whole. With a captivating narrative and unrivaled spectacle, it’s the quintessential superhero game.”

Forbes shared this praise in their 8.5/10 review, in which they said the following:

“For fans of the first game, or Spider-Man, or action games in general, Spider-Man 2 is an easy recommendation… for now, this is all the Spider-action you need for a good long while.”

Overall, it seems that, if you are even a slight fan of Spider-Man and own a PS5 (because this game is unfortunately not coming to the PS4), this is an easy recommendation. By showing off the power of next-gen and delivering gameplay and story improvements from the original, Insomniac has built upon its foundations in an excellent way. For the inevitable third game, here’s hoping that this is built on even more for a conclusion that will provide fans with the strongest superhero trilogy since the Batman Arkham series. For now, however, the reviews indicate that Spider-Man 2 is a must-buy for any PlayStation gamer.
