Sea of Stars Launches to Fantastic Reviews

Today, Sabotage Studios’ ‘Sea of Stars’ has launched, and its already being deemed one of the best indie games of the year. With an 89 on Metacritic and 90 on Opencritic, its being heralded as a return to form for classic style JRPGs while still incorporating its own ideas. No user scores are out just yet, but based on the current 96% very positive rating on Steam, there are already a lot of fans of this release.

Critic site GameGrin had nothing but praise for the 16-bit gem in its 10/10 review, highlighting how it melds the gameplay of classics while incorporating some much-needed modern features:

“Sea of Stars is an amazing-looking and sounding title that has captured all you love from classic turn-based RPGs and improved upon it. I can’t recommend this game enough; this is how you modernise and pay tribute to a classic genre.”

Similarly, PCGamesN were impressed with how Sea of Stars succeeded in being a spiritual successor to the SNES Chrono Trigger while still forging its own identity:

“Sea of Stars is a worthy pseudo-spiritual successor to some of the greatest JRPGs ever made. It improves on what made those games so special by modernizing their magic through balanced and engaging turn-based combat wrapped up in an enthralling world to explore.”

If these reviews are anything to go by, it’s clear that turn-based RPG combat is far from dead, as a lot of AAA developers seem to believe. Whilst not based in Japan, Sabotage Studios has managed to release one of the best JRPGs of the year- and that makes it a studio worth keeping your eye on. If Sea of Stars looks like something you’d want to try (which it should be), you can pick it up on all major platforms now. There’s no excuse if you’re a PS Plus or Xbox Game Pass subscriber either, as this is currently included for free on both services.
