Rumours Claim the Switch 2 Will be Backwards Compatible

As Nintendo fans eagerly await the announcement of an imminent February Direct, rumours have been swirling around the Internet regarding supposed features and additions of Nintendo’s latest console. This is despite the fact that Nintendo heads refuse to mention or even acknowledge the existence of a Switch successor, which has led many to believe that a reveal is imminent. One of the more prominent rumours states that the Nintendo Switch 2 will be backwards compatible- meaning all of your old games will work on the newer console.

This rumour was initiated from the Brazilian website ‘Universo Nintendo’, who claimed that both digital and physical versions of games can be used on the modern consoles. This is certainly good news for Switch owners as this should mean that rereleases of older titles won’t make up a majority of the new console’s games- which is a common issue with the Nintendo Switch in terms of bringing over Wii U games. Of course, this hasn’t been officially confirmed but would be a welcome addition for Nintendo fans.

The same supposed leak claims that developers will be able to create special ‘enhanced’ editions of certain Switch games that will be improved graphically and performance-wise on the newer console. These will likely work in the same way that a lot of PlayStation 5 rereleases work- such as the enhanced edition of the Last of Us released earlier this year. This came with enhanced visuals and even some additional content, which cost £10 for those who already owned the game on PS4. Whether these upgrades will be free or cost money on the new Nintendo Switch is up in the air.

Considering the huge library of physical and digital games that so many Nintendo Switch owners have, this news is a sigh of relief- provided that its true. With February quickly marching on, there has been no news as of yet regarding whether a Nintendo Direct will take place, and whether this will showcase the new console. Until then, rumours will continue to spread. Lets hope that this specific leak is true, however, as it will save a lot of people’s wallets when it comes to rereleased games.
