Rockstar Announce Red Dead Redemption is Coming to PS4 and Switch… for £40

In a recent announcement, Rockstar Games have announced that the critically acclaimed ‘Red Dead Redemption’ will finally be coming to the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch consoles. This comes after weeks of speculation and hype following several leaks and a rating from the Korean Ratings board. However, somehow, Rockstar has managed to achieve even less than the bare minimum that players were expecting. Instead of being a remake or even an upscaled remaster, Red Dead Redemption on modern consoles is… the exact same as when it first released.

This was one of the biggest misfires from the company- which seems to be taking a downhill spiral after the disastrous GTA Trilogy remasters. The trailer has been riddled with dislikes and negative comments which stem from Rockstar seemingly doing the bare minimum with a beloved franchise. It seems that Red Dead Redemption as a series has fallen to the wayside even with the release of a sequel. From the lack of Read Dead Online support to this new money-hungry release, Rockstar are clearly becoming more and more focused on what makes them the most money: Grand Theft Auto.

The most egregious aspect of this reveal is that the price point is set at £40.00. That’s for a 10+ year old game with absolutely no improvements made. YouTube user @d_tan reflected the community sentiment in his comment on the trailer:

“Rockstar is the prime example on why backwards compatibility is so useful, as it stops companies from rereleasing a 10+ year old game without major improvements and charge a premium to play it.”

This ties in to a question that a lot of players have had: why isn’t this coming to Xbox and PC? Well, for Xbox players, anyone who already has the Xbox 360 version (which can easily be picked up for £5) can experience the exact same game as what the Switch and PlayStation gamers will have to shell out £40 for. As for why this isn’t coming to PC, that’s unclear, but it probably has something to do with the recent inability for any AAA to make a decent PC port.

To make things worse, in a recent earnings call, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick had the following to say about Red Dead Redemption’s £40 price point when asked by IGN:

“That's just what we believe is the commercially accurate price for it,”

If you’re in the market for a 2010 game for £40 that will run the exact same way (or maybe even worse) as it did when it first released, you can pre-order Red Dead Redemption on the Switch eShop and PlayStation Store now. If you take the advice of the community, however, steer very clear of this exploitative release.
