UK Sees Price Increase for PS5 Digital Consoles

Announced at the tail end of last week and now being in effect, the RRP for the PS5 all digital consoles in the UK has risen from £389.99 to £429.99. This represents an increase of £40 in RRP and inches it closer to the £479.99 price point of the base PS5- which saw an increase itself last year. This is quite the hefty increase and comes down to increasing component costs.

While the UK must suffer a £40 increase for the digital console alone, other regions have increased costs imposed on the disc version of the console. Australia and New Zealand respectively have seen price increases of AUD $829.95 and NZD $949.95 alongside hikes to the digital edition’s cost. So far, the cost of games themselves have not been impacted but, with Nintendo’s bold plan to sell certain Switch 2 games for £75, this could change.

Its important to note some good news when it comes to these price rises, however. The disc drive addition to the PS5 is actually seeing a price drop from an RRP of £99.99 to only £69.99. This £30 drop means its now only £10 extra should you buy the digital console alongside this disc drive. Of course, it would still be cheaper overall to just buy the disc version itself to start with. Regardless, its good to see this option become more accessible in the long run.

The PS5 Pro (which already retails for a hefty £699.99) is not impacted by these regional price increases- perhaps further incentivising the purchase of this edition of the console. Whether the price hikes in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the UK will be mirrored in other regions (especially after the announcements of the USA’s new tariffs) remains to be seen but it wouldn’t be too surprising.
