Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door Remake is in the Top 10 Best Rated Games of the Year

To the surprise of absolutely nobody who knows just how impactful and fantastic the original GameCube version was, Nintendo’s new Switch remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is a certifiable hit for new and old fans alike. Opencritic’s compilation of reviews place the game at an 89 with 100% of critics recommending it. This places it as the 8th best rated game of the year and yet another hit for Nintendo in a streak that doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon even as the Switch ramps down releases in time for its successor next year.

IGN were especially impressed with this overhauled RPG of what many consider to be the GameCube’s greatest game. They game the game a 9/10 in their review, in which they mentioned the following:

“Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is an amazingly loyal and visually dazzling remake of a treasured RPG, and the improvements made throughout easily make this the definitive way to experience Mario’s unforgettable quest.”

With The Thousand Year Door being deemed as the greatest entry in the Paper Mario series by most who play it, its no surprise to see an updated version with enhanced visuals receive so much praise. The Sixth Axis has the following write up:

“Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is a wonderful remake of a GameCube classic. Now in a modern game engine, but with all the quirkiness and charm of the original story and characters, and with a return to the original Paper Mario combat style, it's great for Mario RPG fans and newcomers alike”

The minimal changes to this product do not hinder it but, instead, allow the game to retain the charm and character it had on the GameCube which is, unfortunately, something that newer entries in the series have been lacking in. The original characters, engaging turn based battles and one of the best Mario stories ever are what make this game so special for so many fans. Whether you’re a long-time fan or have never even played a Mario RPG, The Thousand Year Door on Switch is worth picking up according to all metrics.
