Octopath Traveler II Reaches One Million Units Sold

Square Enix has just announced that the recent Ocopath Traveler II has reached one million units sold worldwide across all devices. This news comes four months after the game’s release back in February, which came out on all major consoles and PC. Considering how niche the game is, these sales figures are very impressive- especially considering the fact that its a sequel (despite you not having to had played the original to enjoy this one in any way).

The news was announced in a tweet to the official Square Enix Twitter account (see above), which included some nice commemorative artwork. Despite the impressive sales, the game is selling at a noticeably slower rate compared to the original- which reached the one million sales milestone just over a month after release. This is especially true when you consider that the original was a Switch exclusive for almost a whole year.

However, when you take into account the smaller scale of projects like Octopath when compared to much larger AAA releases, the sales figures aren’t something to scoff at. With turn-based JRPGs (especially those in a pixel art style) becoming less and less popular with mainstream audiences, the fact that Square Enix’s HD 2D offerings are still selling well is a good indicator as to the future of the new psuedo-genre (as well as for a potential Octopath Traveler III- although nothing has been confirmed as of yet).

In four years, the original Octopath Traveler managed to sell a total of 3 million copies, which would be the ideal sales figure for the sequel. Of course, Square Enix has shown itself to be committed to old-school JRPGs, even when they do make less money than larger releases. This is especially true when you consider that the original Bravely Default on the 3DS only sold 1 million copies in its lifetime, and this was given a sequel on the Switch, which went on to sell even better than the original. Despite waning in popularity, there’s still clearly an audience for these types of games- which is something Square Enix have clearly noticed and will hopefully continue to cater to.
