Minecraft 2 Could Be a Real Possibility- Maybe
As strange as it sounds, we could see a sequel to Minecraft in the form of a spiritual successor or something similar. This was announced by Minecraft creator Notch as part of a series of tweets in which he asked audiences what game they thought he should make next. The options were a spiritual successor to the most popular and biggest game of all time, Minecraft, or an original retro-inspired release. As you may expect, four out of five people chose the former.
What this actually means is still unclear- especially after Notch’s longer Tweet explaining the topic. As part of that tweet, he said the following:
“I basically announced minecraft 2. I thought that maybe people ACTUALLY do want me to make another game that's super similar to the first one, and I'm loving working on games again. I don't super duper care exactly which game I make first (or even if I make more), but I do know I'm making one, so I figured I'd absolutely be willing to give it an honest shot in the form of a spiritual successor to minecraft and put up a poll about it.”
Considering that the rights to the Minecraft IP were sold to Microsoft over a decade ago, any sort of sequel or spin off follow up would have to be helmed by Minecraft and Mojang. If this is intended to be its own stand alone release with just inspirations of Minecraft, however, Notch may just be able to make his own project here.
What a ‘spirirtual successor’ to Minecraft would even look like is up in the air. Some comments suggested adding guns, children and new building mechanics to spice up the formula. In this case, however, considering the amount of mods and official add-ons the original game has received over the years, any new additions would likely come in the form of free updates rather than any sort of sequel (especially if Microsoft want to avoid the disaster of the unecessary Overwatch 2).
If Notch was to go in another direction and create an entirely new world in the style of Minecraft, there could be the potential for a shake-up in the sandbox genre. Don’t expect any news or updates on this release any time soon, however. The poll only released on New Years day so this is more of a theoretical project than one set in stone. It’s certainly an interesting idea to see a potential sequel to the best selling game ever made but, considering the almost limitless potential it already has, it’s hard to see what exactly a follow up could add that couldn’t be part of a free update.
