Ghost of Tsushima Anime Announced Alongside Horizon and Helldivers Movies
PlayStation is kicking off 2025 with a whole slew of announcements just a week into January. Alongside the first trailer for the Last of Us Season 2, the company have also revealed plans for three new movie/TV projects likely riding high off of the success of the HBO show. The first of these is a Horizon movie- which will likely follow the events of the first game ‘Zero Dawn’. This may seem familiar since, yes, the post-apocalyptic game with robotic dinosaurs was meant to come out with an Amazon Prime TV show.
With the news that a fully fledged movie is in the works, however, it’s very likely that the Netflix show was scrapped in favour of a larger project. This could be due to the massive costs that would be imposed by requiring huge metallic dinosaurs to be made for each episode (whether practical or CGI). Turning this into a straight movie with wider appeal is a smart move and will hopefully bring more fans to the series. No release date or even window has been set for this one yet.
The next project is something quite a bit different: a Ghost of Tsushima anime. Before you go crazy about an animated retelling of the story from the game, its important to note that this will be based on the ‘Legends’ multiplayer mode rather than the main plot. This side mode featured samurai fighting off Yokai from a bunch of locations scattered around Tsushima. There wasn’t too much of a plot focus on this multiplayer mode- which should leave the writers with quite a lot of wriggle room to craft a unique spin on the Samurai subgenre of anime. This is set to release at some point in 2027- potentially not far after Ghost of Yotei (which is set to release at some point this year).
The final announcement that PlayStation made was among the more unexpected (unless you followed the leaks from the tail end of last year). A fully fledged Helldivers movie is set to enter production soon. With the massive success of Helldivers 2 earlier last year, it’s a smart move to cash in on it (unless this ends up like the Halo TV show of course). With Helldivers being a multiplayer game with more focus on killing alien bugs and maintaining capitalism, there’s not too much to base a plot on. With such a great world, however, there’s a lot of potential here.
We’ve come a long way with video game movies and TV shows in recent years: the aforementioned Last of Us TV show was a hit with a second and third season already confirmed, the Mario Bros. Movie made an insane amount of money and the Fallout TV show was one of the best thing’s the franchise has done in over a decade. Of course, there are still the occasional missteps (looking at the Borderlands movie from last year) but there’s a lot of potential with the Horizon, Helldivers and Ghost of Tsushima IPs. Hopefully, each of these live up to this promise when they release in the coming years.
