Metaphor: ReFantazio Becomes Atlus’ Quickest Selling Game

In a Tweet posted the day of its release, Atlus confirmed that their latest game, Metaphor: ReFantazio, sold over 1 million copies within its first 24 hours. This makes it the studio’s quickest selling release to date and places the game on track to be another huge success for the devs. This breaks the short-term record that Persona 3: Reload held earlier this year when it became the first Atlus game to sell over a million copies in under a week.

Of course, a million sales in a day is an impressive feat- especially considering the niche JRPG status of the game. This is even more true when you consider Metaphor not being a pre-existing franchise. While Persona has grown to a giant in the RPG sphere, having a completely new IP smash all of Atlus’ previous records is an impressive feat. Even one of the studio’s biggest releases, Persona 5 Royal, only managed to reach this milestone a little under two months since it came out.

Metaphor: ReFantazio isn’t only a financial success for Sega and Atlus, however. It’s also been a critical one. The game has maintained its mighty 92 rating on Opencritic- catapulting itself into the best rated games of the year. It’s a deserved success story for Atlus who continue to make incredible innovative games in their respective series and reconfirms the studio as the kings of the JRPG in a year that has a ton of competition.

With hits like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Astro Bot and even the recent Silent Hill 2 remake, 2024 isn’t short of potential Game of the Year champions. Whether this JRPG will manage to snatch victory away from those other releases remains to be seen but, from its sales numbers and critical reviews already alone, its already cemented itself as a phenomenal release. You can pick up Metaphor: ReFantazio now on all major platforms.
