Latest Dynasty Warriors Game Launches to Strong Reviews
Dynasty Warriors Origins- the 10th game in the series by my count (and the first one in 7 years) released last week to a strong reception. The game series best known for fighting a ridiculous amount of enemies at once as historical Asian figures has inspired recent spin-offs such as Zelda: Hyrule Warriors and Persona 5 Strikers but its finally back with its very own entry and, by all accounts, its one of the best in the series.
Not only is it a great game in itself but, according to critics, it’s also one of the best starting points for the series (hence the ‘origins’ part of the name). Most reviews pointed to an improved combat system, greatly improved visuals, and the ability to handle an insane amount of enemies on screen without too many performance or graphical issues. One site that was especially impressed with Koei Tecmo’s latest offering was IGN which awarded it a 9/10 with the following write-up:
“Dynasty Warriors: Origins doesn’t just have the largest amount of enemies the series has thrown on screen at once, it also deepens its combat, improves its storytelling, and provides a healthy amount of replayability.”
Regarding fan reception, Dynasty Warriors Origins has been a massive hit. The game has a 94% very positive rating on Steam and just over 4,000 reviews. Considering that the previous game in the series, Dynasty Warriors 9, received a mostly negative rating, this new release is a marked improvement. One Steam user, William Shakesman, had the following review that seems to summarise the community’s feelings on the release quite well:
“Every cutscene, every character design, every line of dialogue in this game embodies a 14 year old boy's idea of what is cool. As a result, this is one of the coolest, greatest games in recent memory.”
So, if you’re a fan of the series or are interested in the historical hack-and-slash action that Dynasty Warriors offers, you can pick this release up for all major consoles now. If you’re looking for something with a strong, compelling story, ‘Origins’ does seem to lack but if you want to slaughter hundreds and thousands of troops with ridiculously powerful moves, there’s no better game on the market.
