Japanese Game ‘Bakeru’ Gets English Ports on PC and Switch

Previously locked to Japan, 3D platformer ‘Bakeru’ is finally making its way over to the west on September 3rd this year. The game, which received strong reviews when it launched in Japan last year, was inspired by the classic ‘Goemon’ games from Konami. These rarely got localised- with only a handful coming to the SNES, Nintendo 64 and Game Boy systems and their genres ranged from action-adventure to platformers. Taking on the legacy of these classics, Bakeru was created by many of the original team who worked on these titles.

Taking place across all 47 Japanese prefectures in over 50 levels, the game stars the titular ‘Bakeru’ in a mix of action combat and platforming challenges much like the original Goemon releases. The game is described by its developers to take place in a ‘fairy tale’ Japan inspired by old Japanese period dramas. By using Bakeru’s magical drum, players will banish spirits and demons as they traverse a wide range of environments mirroring Japan’s diverse climates.

With the Steam and Nintendo Switch western releases, developer ‘Good-Feel Co. Ltd.’ have also added a couple of new features. This includes new attacks, enemies and combos that will be integrated into the base game’s levels. If you’re interested in learning more about the different regions of Japan whilst fighting through them with funky magical powers, consider picking up Bakeru when it launches on the Nintendo eShop and Steam later this week on September 3rd for £34.99. You can also try a free demo now on the Switch.
