Indie Game of the Year Nominee Coming to PS Plus this Month

In the recent PlayStation Plus monthly game refresh, it was announced that Dave the Diver (which was nominated for indie game of the year at last years Game Awards) would be coming to the service on April 16th. Its important to note that this will be exclusive to PlayStation Plus Extra members and above, as Plus Essential only provides monthly games as well as online functionality. Whether you have Extra or Premium, though, you’ll be able to play this restaurant manager/exploration game when it drops later this month.

The date that Dave the Diver is hitting PlayStation Plus is also the date in which it will make its debut on the console. Previously being exclusive to PC and the Nintendo Switch, the PlayStation version of the game will be releasing on April 16th. There’s still no word on Xbox but, considering its increasing focus on indies, hopefully we’ll see this hit the final major title as soon as possible. The PlayStation version of the indie (which is currently sitting at a 97% overwhelmingly positive rating on Steam) will include Dual Sense support including adaptive triggers for reeling in fish and enhanced rumble.

Although the game is universally loved across the board, it did rack up some controversy for its nomination for Indie game of the year since, technically, it wasn’t an indie game. It was developed and published by South Korean studio ‘MintRocket’ who, as many were quick to point out, were anything but indie. This brought up a conversation online about what makes a game indie. Is it its art style and budget or does it have to be made and self published by an independent developer? If this last point is true, does that mean that anything published by company’s like Devolver Digital isn’t a true indie? There’s no right answer to this debate which continues in the gaming industry. Putting this aside, though, Dave the Diver is undoubtedly a fantastic game and worth checking out if you have PlayStation Plus or even buying on day one if you have PS5. Either way, you can pick it up on April 16th.
