Baldur’s Gate 3 Hasn’t Got a Metacritic Score (yet)

Despite releasing yesterday, the much anticipated Baldur’s Gate 3 has yet to receive an overall Metacritic score due to only three reviews being published so far. Every other critic has a ‘review in progress’ that outlines their first impressions without attaching a specific number to their thoughts. But why is this the case? Well, according to Leana Hafer of IGN, the review codes for Baldur’s Gate 3 were only sent out on Sunday morning- meaning critics were given less than 5 days to fully experience the 100-hour long campaign before the embargo.

Considering that this would require them to play the game for 20 hours a day, it's understandable why reviews are slow to release. In fact, this may be a rare situation where the user scores will roll out before an average critic score is given. since users will be free to add their thoughts on Metacritic later today. From the reviews we have so far of a 90, 95 and 100, it seems that Baldur’s Gate will be a critical sucess much like its predecessors.

On top of this, the dozens of reviews in progress point to Baldur’s Gate 3 being one of the greatest Dungeons and Dragons-style games ever made. IGN believes that the game is a huge improvement from older, more conventional Western RPGs:

“Baldur's Gate 3 is a big step forward from the likes of Skyrim or Dragon Age. And that goes such a long way toward making the world feel more real and making me feel really smart for coming up with unconventional solutions.”

Attack of the Fanboy shares their praise in their pre-review thoughts, which you can read now on their website:

“I've only played 10 hours so far, but Baldur's Gate 3 is a defining RPG that masterfully blends all that's brilliant about D&D into an equally convenient and engaging video game. The more progress I make, the more hooked I become.”

Since the game is still so fresh for critics and fans alike, it’ll be a while before more reviews and opinions on the game roll out. However, it seems that most who are currently playing it are impressed, which may be just enough to convince you to pick up the game and form your own impressions. If you’re a fan of old-school RPGs with a few modern quality-of-life improvements, it won’t hurt to try Baldur’s Gate 3- which is out now on PC and will come to PlayStation 5 later this year. Don’t feel too left out though Xbox fans, since Baldur’s Gate 3 is still confirmed for the system, although without a solid date just yet.
