Assassins Creed Infinity Leaks Japan and Europe Setting

This Saturday (10th September), Ubisoft is holding its very own Ubisoft Forward conference. The gaming giant has promised to announce new projects, reveal new trailers for upcoming releases, and have a big focus on their biggest franchise: Assassins Creed. We’ve known for over a year now that Ubisoft has ambitious plans for the once-humble franchise. Plans that include a live service game have already been announced earlier this year, through a project by the name of ‘Assassin's Creed: Infinity. Hardly any details of this have been released so far but we already know that Ubisoft plans to have this replace the yearly/bi-yearly model which has been going on since the dawn of the franchise.

There have been rumors this week that Infinity will have a constantly changing world, with different histories and mini Assassins Creed experiences constantly being churned out over time. It’s unclear how Ubisoft plans to make money from this, but I’d wager it includes everyone’s favorite modern gaming inventions: micro-transactions and battle passes (somehow). The more modern entries in the franchise have already implemented in-game purchases for a single-player experience- allowing you to buy experience points and cosmetics. How this will translate to Infinity remains to be seen, but depending on how ‘live-service’ Ubisoft want to go (and judging by their track record) this could be one of the most heavily monetized non-mobile games ever to release. This sticking point is what’s worrying a lot of long-running fans of the franchise.

Also this week, rumors have circled around two of these potential Infinity settings being Japan and 16th Century Europe- but this is to be taken with a grain of salt. Ubisoft has been notoriously reluctant to take the franchise to Japan. On top of this, Sucker Punch already brought out Ghost of Tsushima in 2020, which is a very Assassins-esque game that’ll be tough to top. This is likely to bring a lot of criticism, especially since there would be a lot of hype surrounding the launch of this. We shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves, though, since this is only rumored (but it should be noted that previous Assassins Creed leaks in the past have been pretty much spot on). Speaking of this, another main series entry (and potentially the final one before Infinity) was leaked last week. Assassins Creed: Mirage was later officially announced by the Assassins Creed Twitter Account on September 1st.

It remains to be seen whether this is a continuation of the RPG formula seen with the latest trilogy, but even more, rumors suggest a return to the classic roots of the franchise. This is made more believable by the look and feel of the promotional material taking us back to the Middle East. I, for one, certainly hope to see this come to fruition, but it’s good to be cautious with Ubisoft’s track record as of late. Either way, all will be revealed on Saturday 10th September at the Ubisoft Forward Conference.
