Hogwarts Legacy is the Best-Selling Game of 2023

In a recent interview with Variety, Warner Bros. Games announced that last year’s Hogwarts Legacy sold over 22 million copies- cementing it as the most sold game of the entire year. This beats out other releases including Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III, Diablo IV and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (although its worth noting that only physical copies of Switch games can be counted due to the NPD not being able to track digital sales data). That’s a phenomenal result- although not too surprising if you paid attention to the big splash that Hogwarts Legacy made in February.

This news was announced by David Haddad, the president of Warner Bros. Games. In their interview with Variety, they also announced that 2 million of those sales came from December alone- which was ten months since the game first released. Considering that 2 million sales would be impressive for any game in its first month alone, this achievement shows just how popular this Harry Potter simulator was and still is. Haddad also revealed that there were a collective “707 million hours played” as well as the following in-game data:

“819 million potions were brewed, 1.3 billion magical plants harvested, 593 million magical beasts rescued and 4.9 billion dark wizards defeated within the halls of the virtual wizarding world”

Of course, with this huge financial success, Warner Bros. Games are already planning on expanding the Potterverse to wider shores- although nothing has been officially revealed yet. There have been talks about a Quidditch sports game but that’s still likely a while off. Hogwarts Legacy proved the strength of the Harry Potter IP in a gaming space, and capitalising off of that would prove very profitable based on these sales figures- even for smaller projects. Keep an eye out for a barrage of games set in the Wizarding World for the next few years because they are most certainly coming.
