Sea of Stars Set to Have a Physical Release

The much-anticipated RPG from Sabotage Studios has recently been announced to have a physical release planned for early 2024. This is in partnership with iam8bit and will be releasing for the PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X. No other details have been shared yet, but the announcement tweet did include a link to a newsletter that will keep those interested up to date with any news surrounding this limited release including price, quantity, and a release window.

This announcement is fantastic as it allows fans to hold a physical copy of the game for their shelf- which is very rare for indie games. With the industry becoming more and more digital-centric, its great to see that there are studios who still see the importance of having physical media for videogames. This is especially important when you consider than, eventually, the storefronts for many of these games will be shut down- effectively marooning a whole host of smaller projects that, unless ported, will be inaccessible for new fans.

While information is very limited so far, its likely that physical copies of Sea of Stars will be much less in quantity when compared to AAA releases- especially since its being handled by a third-party company focusing on indie games. As for the price, we can speculate that it will likely be between £5-£10 more than the digital game, which will place it in the £40 ballpark. While this seems like a lot, especially for a game that a lot of people will have already owned by the time it launches, there is one very important saving grace for player’s wallets: Game Pass and PS Plus.

Since Sea of Stars is releasing to both Xbox’s Game Pass and PlayStation’s PS Plus services next week (August 29th), fans will be able to experience Sabotage’s latest game for free (kind of). This means that, if Sea of Stars is the masterpiece that it is shaping up to be, the money you saved on not paying for it at launch can be used to purchase a physical copy early next year- meaning you get to support the developers while still getting a physical copy for your shelf. Whether you’re all in or on the fence, it’s a good idea to sign up to the newsletter to find out news of this release as it comes in- which you can do right here.
