Debut RPG ‘Expedition 33’ Becomes Best Rated Game of the Year
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is the first game from French studio ‘Sandfall Interactive’ and, according to critics, its one very impressive debut title. In fact, the Xbox release is now the highest rated release of the year according to aggregate site Opencritic at a mighty 91. This places it above other releases including Split Fiction and Kingdom Come Deliverance 2.

The turn-based RPG set in 1800s France sees a party of characters set out on a quest to destroy a malevolent entity who erases anybody over a certain age each year. Its an intriguing and unique setup assisted by a beautifully crafted world set in a location and time period that’s rarely explored in games- especially turn based RPGs.
It seems that a lot of the game’s influence comes from the Persona series with stylish animations and abilities. On top of that, though, there are some real time reactive combat options that range from parrying, dealing increased damage and pulling off special moves based on well times button presses. This should add more variety and tension to each battle in a similar way to how the early Paper Mario games and classic Legend of Dragoon implemented these mechanics.

For most critics, Sandfall Interactive seems to have excelled in its first venture. A gripping story, addictive combat and exciting world lead to one of the best turn based RPGs in years. Push Square said the following in their 9/10 review:
“Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is one of the most refreshing and original RPGs in years… The intriguing setup expands to provide an engrossing, excellent narrative with lovable and charismatic characters. On top of this, The exemplary combat goes above and beyond its turn-based traditions”
With such a strong showing and reaction from critics, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 seems to be one of the highlights of the year so far. Its available now on PC, Xbox and PS5. Its also available if you have an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription right now.
