The Assassin’s Creed VR Game is Out Now- If You Can Stomach it

Ubisoft’s latest entry in the Assassin’s Creed series launched earlier this month- but its probably not what you might be expecting. Unlike the mainline third person entries like this year’s ‘Assassin’s Creed Mirage’, this entry is a first person VR game that sees you jumping around and killing targets like your favourite characters in the series. Titled ‘Assassins Creed Nexus’, and exclusive to the Oculus Rift, this looks to be an interesting new way to experience the slashing and stabbing that the series is known for- but this time, up close.

While certainly not for everyone (if the reveal trailer made you queasy, this might be worth a miss), ‘Nexus’ has been receiving some promising reviews. It currently sits at an 81 rating on Open critic- with 82% of those who reviewed recommending it. Considering how harsh critics often are on VR projects, these are some promising scores. Reviews are highlighting how surprisingly feature complete the game is for VR and have praised how it nails the feel of Assassins Creed despite being a shift to first person.

GamingTrend were especially impressed with the offering- giving it an incredibly high 95/100 in their review. They loved how unique the game felt while praising how smoothly it ran (which hopefully removes the feeling of being sick while playing):

“A showcase of what's possible in VR, Assassin's Creed Nexus VR delivers a completely unique foray into the world of Templars and Assassins, but in a first person perspective, and frankly, there's nothing quite like it. While the Quest 3 isn't up to the task, making for some wobbly frame rates, the game is thankfully a nausea-free experience you'll want to experience.”

COGconnected agreed with this take in their 85/100 score- although they advised that the MetaQuest 3 is definitely the way to play this one if you can over the MetaQuest 2:

“Assassin’s Creed Nexus VR is probably the best action game available for the Meta Quest 3 system and I’d go so far as to call it a hardware-seller. It’s certainly an impressive proof-of-concept for the standalone headset. As an Assassin’s Creed game, it nails the series’ classic stealth and parkour moves, all the more impressive in virtual reality. It isn’t an open world game, but all the better for it. I’d say it’s a must-buy for new Quest 3 owners.”

So, if you’re into VR and are looking for a game to test out your brand new MetaQuest 3 system, you can’t do much better than Assassins Creed Nexus it seems. With smooth gameplay, immersive parkour and assassinations and, most importantly, giving you the ability to play the series for the first time in first person, reviewers are very impressed. Although VR is still very much a niche part of the industry, games like Nexus show that there’s still a lot of potential to be harnessed.
