Resident Evil 4 Remake is a masterpiece according to critics

Set to launch on March 24th, the Resident Evil 4 Remake has achieved a lot of positive press since its announcement last summer. With a fantastic demo, the addition of completely new side quests to the game and the love people had for the original game, this remake was already being set up to be a smash hit for Capcom. With the review embargo ending earlier today, the suspicions of many are all but confirmed: Resident Evil 4’s Remake is phenomonal.

Achieving a very high 93 on Metacritic, the fourth entry in the acclaimed Resident Evil franchise reclaims its crown as the king of horror. With dozens of ‘perfect’ 10/10 reviews, Resident Evil 4 continues the trend of fantastic remakes in 2023- after the Dead Space and Metroid Prime releases earlier this year. IGN was one of the publishers who fell in love with the recreation or RE4- giving the following summary:

“The Resident Evil 4 remake is the series' most relentlessly exciting adventure rebuilt, refined, and realised to the full extent of its enormous potential.”

Similarly, Push Square offered the following review after giving it a flawless score:

Nearly 20 years later, Resident Evil 4 is just as much of a masterpiece today as it was in 2005. Capcom has faithfully remade a genuine classic by bringing it into the modern age and kitting it out with new content, tremendous combat, and striking visuals. What was there before was already enough to consider Resident Evil 4 one of the best games of all time, but now it earns that title in 2023”

With nothing but praise being sung for the return of an industry titan, this is a pretty safe bet to pick up whether you’re a horror novice or have played through Leon Kennedy’s adventure dozens of times. Its likely that the success of Resident Evil 4’s Remake may have an impact on the future of the series too. With Capcom confirming the first person ‘Winters’ saga has concluded with 2021’s Resident Evil: Village, this may be the ideal time to return to the roots of the franchise with a third-person action-centric take on the horror formula.

Regardless of the direction Capcom decides to take the series from now on, there’s one thing that’s certain: this remake is fantastic. With upgraded visuals, quality of life improvements, and by bringing a classic to the newer, much more powerful consoles, 4’s remake is definitively the best yet for Capcom’s line of Resident Evil rereleases. If this looks like something you’re remotely interested in, you can pick it up on all major consoles (barring the switch) later this month on March 24th.
