Playstation Unveils Special God of War: Ragnarok Controller

Earlier this week, PlayStation held a State of Play focusing on ten upcoming big-budget games. These included VR titles, more details on long-awaited projects, and, of course, God of War: Ragnarok. All eyes were on Sony’s Santa Monica Studios for this trailer, which definitely delivered. With stunning visuals, innovative gameplay building on the 2018 original, and an enticing story, this is looking to be Elden Ring’s biggest competitor as Game of the Year 2022. However, before we were graced with this beefy trailer, we were treated to something a little smaller, but still really exciting.

This is the new God of War: Ragnarok PS5 controller. Having a one-minute teaser dedicated to its reveal, it's clear that PlayStation knows the appeal of this design. The slick contrast between the white and dark blue and the touchpad has a unique design that really sticks out as a controller that is clearly God of War, but also subtle enough so that it doesn’t look overly forced for a tie-in game. I, for one, think this is the best design of the controller so far. We have had some great colors released earlier this year (especially the sleek black and purple variations), but this design is by far the best.

It remains to be seen whether this controller will be tied to a console face plate variation (with numerous different colors being rolled out over the past few months), but I find this unlikely considering it would have likely just been revealed alongside the controller if this was the case. This is an exciting reveal not only because of the great limited-edition design but also because of what it means for Sony’s controller variations in the future. The PS3 was known for its interesting special edition designs, but the PS4 was much more lacking in this regard. The best we got was a couple of camo color swaps that don’t exactly look great. With this understated dual-wolf design, it's clear that Playstation is back in the game when it comes to more custom controllers. I, for one, am very excited to see what will come next. The Limited Edition God of War: Ragnarok Controller is releasing in tandem with the game on November 11th this year.
