Persona 5 Tactica Receives Strong Early Reviews

The latest game from the iconic JRPG series, ‘Persona 5 Tactica’ is a spin-off tactics game coming on Friday. Reviews are out already, though, and most critics seem to have really enjoyed it. Currently sitting at a 79 average rating on Opencritic with 71% of critics recommending the game, Atlus has seemingly delivered yet another great spin-off from the Persona franchise. If you’re craving some more content from the iconic characters of Persona 5, this looks to be an easy buy.

IGN found a lot to love about the game in their 8/10 review- praising the characters and new battle system that keeps gameplay engaging throughout:

“Persona 5 Tactica is a big bag of bite-sized Phantom Thieves adventures that keeps the spirit of the series alive and shows that it can work great with a grid-based battle system.”

Sadly, not every publication was a huge fan- with some arguing that the spin-off game didn’t have the impact of the original Persona 5 back in 2017. Gamer Guides was one of the publications that felt this way- voicing so in their 6.5/10 review:

“While die-hard Phantom Thieves will enjoy stepping into the Metaverse once again - as slick, stylish, and cool as it ever was - Persona 5 Tactica lacks variety, momentum, and challenge. Its key issue lies in a fatal lack of mechanical balance, resulting in an endearing but unsatisfying strategy experience.”

While nothing ground-breaking, it seems that most critics were quite fond of this brand-new spin on the franchise. Although Persona 5 fatigue may be setting in for some, there’s always a good reason to return to its universe. This is especially true as this is the second major spin-off of Persona 5 that has received great reviews- with Persona 5 Strikers scoring an 82 on Opencritic. If you’re a fan of the series, PC Gamer’s score of 9/10 may put you more at ease. They were consistently impressed with the innovation on display despite returning characters and music:

“A supremely satisfying turn-based strategy spin-off, and one of Persona's best ever stories.”

If you’re looking for a smaller, new romp with your favourite characters from Persona 5, then Persona 5 Tactica is a must buy. However, if you’re not familiar with the series, then it may be best to wait until you have some experience in the earlier games to make the most of this one. Either way, the game is coming this Friday for all major systems- and is even coming to Xbox Game Pass day one for all of you Xbox and PC players.
