Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Sets Series Record on Steam

The second in the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy has graced PC with its presence after 11 months of being a PlayStation 5 exclusive. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has seen some issues when it comes to its release on PC. Square Enix are known for their less than stellar PC ports that often leave players to wait until bugs are fixed until buying their games. Thankfully, this PC port is mostly quite good- although there are still some graphical issues that need to be ironed out. This has been reflected in the Steam score of the game- which is currently sitting at a mostly positive 76%.

More impressive with this release, however, is the game’s concurrent player count on Steam- which is the highest the series has ever seen for a single player offering. An all time peak of 40,564 concurrent players so far makes Final Fantasy VII Rebirth a massive success for Square Enix. This puts it above Final Fantasy VII Remake- which achieved a peak of only 13,000 back when it dropped on the platform in 2022. MMO offering Final Fantasy XIV still blows this out of the park as you may expect with an all-time peak of 95,000 but that’s not overly surprising considering it being an online entry in the series

The player count for Rebirth has been steadily hovering at the 25,000 concurrent players which is good news for the series. With Rebirth being a sequel, the massive increase in concurrent player numbers may be surprising. One point that may explain this is that the PC port is dropping less than one year after the game’s initial timed PS5 exclusivity. This is compared to the two year wait that fans had to endure for the first part of the trilogy.

With the success of the series on PC (and Square Enix implying that future games in the series would no longer be PS5/timed PS5 exclusives after Final Fantasy XVI), we could see the final, third part in this trilogy come day in date to the platform. The success of this PC port has been attributed to mods by Director Naoki Hamaguchi, which certainly increases the longevity and popularity of a game on PC storefronts- and could be food for thought for the studio when it comes to what platforms to launch Part 3 on. Until then, you can pick up Final Fantasy VII Rebirth right now on Steam.
