Temtem will receive no new content updates

In a recent announcement, the developers for Pokémon-inspired MMO ‘Temtem’ revealed that the upcoming 1.8 update would be the final version of the game to add any additional content. While servers will continue to be maintained and smaller patches added when required, this marks the end of Temtem receiving any new features. Considering that MMOs often last for upwards of a decade, this announcement came as somewhat of a shock to players who expected Temtem to be supported for years to come.

One upside to this announcement is that all of the microtransaction content that was previously locked behind a paywall would become completely free to all players. This comes as part of the 1.7 update releasing in June- with the 1.8 version closing off the game at the end of 2024. This means all costumes and cosmetics that you had to pay real money to obtain will now cost nothing. Of course, this also means that there will not be any additional microtransactions added after this June update.

Temtem was originally hugely popular when it came as the result of a 2018 Kickstarter campaign, where it raised $574,000 compared to its much smaller $70,000 goal. When the game officially released in 2020, players flocked to the MMO to experience a much more complex and innovative title than a lot of modern Pokémon releases were offering. Since then, however, content updates slowed down far quicker than players were completing the new content, leaving many to complain that the game lacked momentum and reasons to keep playing over time.

Despite this, the announcement that support would cease on the game came as a surprise just four years after launch- which is no time when you compare it to other MMOs such as Final Fantasy XIV, which dropped back in 2010 and are still receiving updates to this day. The announcement of a Vampire: Survivors-inspired game ‘Temtem Swarm’ didn’t help improve the sentiment around the MMO, as many felt like the developers were abandoning the game. Although the developers have confirmed that the servers would remain up for as long as possible, this feels like a consolation prize for gamers that invested so much time (and money) into this short lived MMO.
