Fallout TV Series Reveals First Teaser Image

Earlier today, Amazon released the first image of their new Fallout television show- which is rumoured to be releasing at some point next year. The Prime Video series shows citizens of Vault 33 opening the door of their vault to the irradiated wasteland, like so many before (and after) them. See the image below:

That’s basically all we know for now. Without a set location or story to follow, the Fallout show can really go anywhere. Unlike The Last of Us and Horizon: Zero Dawn television breakthroughs, this isn’t looking to follow a set structure found in any of the games. This is probably a good thing, however, as it sets expectations at a reasonable level. The Last of Us is already set to be an almost exact recreation of the first game alone, so any deviations (no matter how small) will be contentious amongst the already divided fan base. By keeping this as a separate story, however, a lot of the burden is lifted.

This being said, the atmosphere of Fallout’s wasteland is thicker than the radiation clouds that still reside in some areas. Even with the criticized Fallout 4 and 76, the landscape that players traverse remained heavy with stories and grunge. It may be a little bit harder for a TV show to capture this: silence is a big aspect of the Fallout franchise. Between listening to old 50’s bops to getting ripped apart by death claws, the franchise’s biggest strength is demonstrating the sheer destruction that humans are capable of- and all of the games manage to capture this really well.

Amazon has been under heavy criticism due to its handling of the Lord of the Rings property, and Bethesda's latest disaster, Fallout 76, was even more hated- with many crowning it as the worst game of 2018. With these recent blunders, it seems like a crossover of Fallout and Amazon's television department would be doomed to fail. However, Fallout as a series still has a lot of potential outside the medium video games, and it may be that the show can bring in more fans with success in the form of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners or even Arcane to a degree. Either way, this show could play a pivotal role in the future of the Fallout franchise and the direction it takes as a whole. Let's just hope that this direction isn't one that becomes even more controversial for long time fans.
