Avowed is Roughly as Long as The Outer Worlds, Claims Game Director

Obsidian’s next big game, Avowed, is set to release at some point in 2024 and, despite receiving a couple of trailers, there’s still a lot we don’t know about this fantasy RPG. Thanks to a recent interview with site Game Informer, however, we have a little more information on some key aspects of the game. This includes the ability to play in third person, story details and, most importantly, its length, In the interview, Carrie Patel claimed that the game would be comparable to Outer Worlds in terms of length.

According to information on The Outer Worlds on HowLongToBeat.com, this places Avowed at a runtime of between 13 and 26 hours depending on how much players explore the open zones. Compared to previous other Obsidian games, this does seem to be on the shorter side. Take Pillars of Eternity (which is set in the same world as Avowed) for example.

The game can take upwards of 100 hours to beat if players take their time to explore the world by delving into its secrets and lore. Of course, a CRPG is quite a lot different from a first-person action RPG but, considering how many complained about the brevity of The Outer Worlds’ story, Avowed may suffer the same issues.

Even compared to other first person RPGs, however, this still seems very short. Obsidian’s very own Fallout: New Vegas took between 30 and 60 hours depending on a player’s pension for exploration. Of course, a game being short is not necessarily a bad thing and, a lot of the time, restraint can lend its way to improve a game by preventing bloat and boredom.

On top of this, with Avowed being ‘open zone’ in a similar way to The Outer Worlds, there’s likely to be fewer side quests and areas to explore than other contemporaries in the genre like Skyrim. Of course, whether its brevity is a blessing or a curse remains to be seen when Avowed launches at some point this year (which may very well be November 12th if certain leaks are to be believed).
