Nintendo Announces Direct For Later Today

A Nintendo Direct has been confirmed for later on today, June 21st, at 15:00 BST. This comes after much speculation that Nintendo would be missing out on a June showcase, which wasn’t helped by radio silence from the company. However, always eager to surprise, it seems that Nintendo will just fit into the summer announcement window that has so far included the Xbox and PlayStation showcases earlier this month.

The Direct was announced to last roughly 40 minutes and contain more information on Nintendo’s next big release: Pikmin 4.  Aside from that, nothing else is known about the showcase. Unlike most Directs, however, it seems thar fans are going into this one with their expectations low and their hype in check. With the only big first party release scheduled for the rest of the year being Pikmin 4, this Direct is set to be a smaller, more low-key show likely focusing on more indie and niche releases.

This is especially true considering that this is the first direct following the launch of last month’s huge ‘The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’, which was set to be the next big thing from Nintendo since its announcement in 2019. Upon its release, its clear that the hype was warranted. With a 96-critic score on Metacritic and a very impressive 8.7 user score (which are usually much lower, even for AAA masterpieces), ‘Tears of the Kingdom’ was undeniably a success for Nintendo in terms of popularity and sales. With it already being reported as the third best-selling Zelda game of all time, it’s become evident that the latest Zelda will crack the top 10 most sold Switch games easily.

But what does this mean for this afternoon’s Direct? Well, it likely confirms that, aside from Pikmin 4, we won’t see any huge AAA games announced or shown off. As the dust settles for Nintendo’s 20th Zelda release, its clear that they’ll be riding that high for a while to come- or, at least, until Pikmin 4 releases next month. That being said, Nintendo are known for their surprises, so the Direct is still well worth checking out if you can. You can check the livestream out on Nintendo’s official YouTube channel at 15:00 BST today.
